Where You Are

Have you ever sung a song, and in the midst of singing it, realized exactly what you were saying? A light bulb moment of the musical variety. The tune is catchy, so you la-la-la along, then BAM! Oh my gosh! Yeah! This is right! And you sing all the more emphatically. Or perhaps, like I did the other day at church, it's Oh my gosh! What am I saying? I'm lying. To God. In church. And He knows it!

So what lyrics made me stop mid-song?

Send me out to the world to make You known
Send me out to the world to make you known
Send me out to the world

The world is a big place, and the truth is I don't want to go "out to the world." I have some health issues that often make travel more trouble than it's worth, plus I simply like to lay my head down on my own comfy pillow in my own snugly bed each night.

We (everyone but me) sang the song through a second time, and I realized that there were a few lines that I could sing and mean them wholeheartedly:

I wanna be Your hands & feet
I wanna be Your voice every time I speak

As we sang, I slipped back in time some forty years and saw the construction paper cut-out letters as they circled construction paper daisies on my sixth-grade classroom's bulletin board. The message on the board read, "Bloom Where You're Planted." At the time, I thought it ridiculous. Of course, a flower blooms where it's planted! Duh, Mrs. Luna! (middle schooler's eye roll).

I may not have the fastest tongue on the lily pad, but I eventually caught the fly: oh! We're the flowers!

It's a lesson I've learned before, but standing there in church, singing this song and remembering that bulletin board, the light bulb grew bright (even though I hadn't known it had dimmed): He HAS sent me into the world. I'm already there. Here. I'm in it now. Right now. Right where I am. Living in my middle class home in my middle class neighborhood with my middle class friends, family, co-workers, and co-congregants. THIS is the world where God has sent me and causes me to bloom. This is where He calls me to be His hands, His feet, His voice. HERE. Today. To the people He brings into my life this day.

Where you are right now is God’s place for you. Live and obey and love and believe right there.

  1. Actually, yes! I did it about 8 years ago (and probably since then) and have never forgotten the moment! I was in a small group of believers and we were singing, "Your name is like honey on my lips, Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and Jesus I love you...." Right then I was challenged, "How much do I actually love Him and show it and how much is just words?" I will never forget that moment! God still uses it to remind me today, "Are you really showing me love or is it just words?" Thanks for the post!

Christ In You

My husband and I had dinner the other night with some dear friends. Our conversation didn't exactly meander to the topic of God. It was more like it burst into it with both guns blazing, although now, I can't stop my thoughts from meandering back to one simple phrase that our friend said: Christ in me . Several years ago I went through a season of reading the works of some Christian mystics, desert fathers and mothers as they are sometimes called because they separated themselves from their culture and lived in the desert to more effectively spend time with God without the distractions of city life. I read quite a bit of Jeanne Guyon. She obviously loved God deeply, and I learned a lot from her writings, but there was one phrase that she couldn't seem to emphasize enough, and it always bothered me - look within yourself to find God (sounds a little new-agey, doesn't it?) Honestly, the thought has been repulsive to me. It's so contrary to our modern Christian thoug...

Believing the Lies

My husband and I recently watched The Help - a story about a group of African American women who worked as maids in Jackson, Mississippi in the '60s. One of the protagonists works for a woman "who got no b'ness havin' babies." This woman, this family maid and nanny, tells her little two year old ward regularly, "You is pretty. You is smart. You is impor'ant." How difficult it is for us to believe that about ourselves - really, to believe anything good about ourselves. I always try to be my raw self when I write a blog post. Today is no exception. So I confess that I've been drowning in a storm of lies lately. My head knows they're lies, and I could easily tell anyone else in the same place that they're lies, but I haven't been able to get a grip. There have been so many of them coming at me at once. It seems that I just break the surface, gulp some fresh air of truth then get pulled back under. One thing I know: the enemy of our ...

Introverts Thrive! The Lies

Last week, I introduced my plan to work through the exercises in a little book called The Highly Sensitive Person's Companion by Ted Zeff  (if you missed it, you can read it here) . Before we jump into our first assignment, let's talk a little bit about introverts and "highly sensitive people." There seems to be some widespread misconceptions of what it means to be an introvert. People often define it as being shy or having social anxiety or worse, being self-absorbed. These descriptions simply aren't true. Extroverts can also be shy, have social anxiety, and can definitely be self-absorbed! Simply stated, introverts are internally stimulated, and they internalize external stimuli. Virtually everything is stimulating to an introvert! To bring it home, here are a few questions to which introverts/highly sensitive people would answer yes: * Do crowds exhaust you? * Do you tend to think before acting? * Is your body sensitive to alcohol and caffeine? * Does no...
